Naija Lingo – Online Slang Dictionary for Nigerian “Pidgin” English

April 30, 2008

Perhaps you’re interested in discovering new Nigerian slangs and can’t afford a Nigerian Pidgin English Dictionary (if at all there’s one), this new social site called Naija Lingo is a new Web 2.0 site where you can discover Nigerian slangs and Pidgin English. It is an online free dictionary for people who want definitions to Nigerian words or slangs, names and phrases, etc created by the people who know them.

The idea is to build a dictionary of pidgin English words that Nigerians all around the world use everyday. Thus, when you sign up, you can add or edit words and also rate words that you feel have better definitions of the slang or pidgin word. There is also “word of the day” – a randomly generated word daily that is shown on the home page.

The site has a nice plugin that allows you to search Naija Lingo straight from your browser while on any site, just as you do with popular search engines such as Google and Yahoo.

Naija Lingo currently has about 370 unique words contributed by over 60 “lexibutors”, as contributors of words are called on the site. In my opinion, this is an interesting and fun site for people who are interested in Nigerian slangs and who want to learn the latest slangs in Nigeria.
