Nigeria is Ranked No. 1 Amongst Africa’s Top 10 Internet Countries

May 4, 2008

Nigeria is ranked 1st among African Internet countries, according to recent surveys of Internet usage in Africa by Internet World Stats. Ironically, most of the Internet-based companies and web startups as well as Web 2.0 technologies and applications have not originated from Nigeria.

Instead, South Africa (Ranked 4th) is currently the leading country in Africa for Web 2.0 technologies such as social bookmarking (Muti.co.za), social media aggregators (Afrigator.com); blogging platforms (iBlog.co.za, Amagama.com, etc); social media sites (Zoopy.com) amongst others.

This raises lots of questions like:

  • What do Nigerians do on the Internet?
  • Why are Nigerians not developing more Internet sites that add value and create a good reputation for Nigeria?
  • Can Nigeria compete favorably with South Africa’s Web 2.0 technologies?

No doubt, we’ve seen good websites such as Sturvs.com, the first social bookmarking site in Nigeria and likely more of sites like this are coming in a few months or years.

How do you expect to see web 2.0 technologies in Nigeria. Not that we don’t have them. I can mention 30 of them but the problem is that they are unknown. It is not easy to start a website and grow it to prominence without adequate funding. Nigerian business men know next to nothing about online ventures and so no body thinks of investing in online ventures.
In the US and even south Africa you are talking about, they have venture capitalist enlightened enough to know that the new way to go is online.
